The Bradshaw Paintings

History:

Australian indigenous culture is the oldest culture in the world. The Bradshaw Paintings are very significant in a global context because they are thought to be the oldest figurative paintings on earth. They are between 65-85,000 years old and can be found on the North Western side of Western Australia. These paintings are the very beginnings of human culture. They depict the beliefs and the history of the peoples of Australia. This is something that stood out as significant to me. It makes Aboriginal art, or ‘rock-paintings’ so much more important to me personally as someone with little knowledge on the topic. This piece of information showcases the significance of our indigenous art.

Introduction

My name is Jamie-lee and I am studying Visual Communications (Bachelor of Design). Our course requires us to complete an indigenous Aboriginal art, culture and design course in order for us to gain understanding of other forms of art, and of course learn more about the art, culture and design of the indigenous people of our land. This was much to my dissatisfaction early in the semester.

I had a very stereotypical view, that our indigenous art is nothing but dot-paintings. However through lack of knowledge comes ignorance, and since gaining knowledge on the subject I have come to understand the art, design and culture in a different way. I have found that there are some very interesting things about Aboriginal art, culture and design and I intend to highlight those things in my blog, and hopefully extinguish others ignorance on the topic.
